PODCAST: Based on a true story?

I joined the guys over at Movie Podcast Weekly again, this time invited on as a "permanent part-time" host. I think that means that although my schedule doesn't allow me to sit-in regularly, they don't want to have to introduce me as a guest anymore. Anyway, I talked about 4 movies that were billed as being based on actual events, though I have a feeling there was a spectrum of truthiness (copyright Al Franken) cross films. It was a fun discussion, as always with those guys (Jason is a legitimate film critic, Karl is an actor) and I got to bring my friend Bill on with me too. That's William Rowan Jr, one of the co-Producers of CLEANFLIX. Enjoy!

Jason Pyles » 01.14.13 »

For Episode 016, we have another double-feature review for you of “Gangster Squad” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” with special guest screenwriter / producer WILLIAM ROWAN JR. During this show, we’ll also reflect on the nominees for the upcoming, 85th Academy Awards ceremony, as well as our usual Mini Reviews.

LIST: The Films of 2012

Joshua Ligairi » 1.12.13 »

I didn't make a list of my favorite films from last year, and I almost skipped this year as well, because I have been so busy at work that I didn't see as many as I'd have liked. But, I had to create a Top 10 for Movie Podcast Weekly's end of year show, so most of the work was done at that point and I decided to just go ahead with what I've seen. And I'm glad I did because this was actually a terrific year for film in my opinion. As usual, I don't like to break my choices down numerically, so you'll find them categorized in my own way below. If you prefer a more traditional list, check out Movie Podcast Weekly 13 where I list my Top 10 of 2012 along with the MPW hosts and special guest Dave Becker, from DVDInfatuation.com (aka Dr. Shock!!!). Just FYI, I have been able to see a few more films since then and my list morphed a bit before this posting.

Excellent (2012) These were my favorite films of the year.

Amour . Anna Karinina . Big Boys Gone Bananas . Bully . A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan . The Imposter . The Master . Moonrise Kingdom .  Django Unchained . Lawless . On the Ice . Once Upon a Time in Anatolia . Take This Waltz . Sinister . Take Shelter . Zero Dark Thirty

Above Average (2012) These were solid movies that are better than most of the crap out there.

The American Scream . Beasts of the Southern Wild . Bones Brigade: An Autobiography .  Damsels in Distress, Dark Knight Rises, The Do-Deca-Pentathlon . End of Watch . Fat Kid Rules the World . For the Greater Glory . GLOW . Haywire .  How to Survive a Plague . The Inkeepers . Killer Joe . Only the Young . Paranorman . Rust And Bone . Searching For Sugarman .  Silent House . Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter . The Amazing Spiderman . Cabin In the Woods . Hitchcock . Hyde Park on Hudson . John Carter . Looper . Safety Not Guaranteed . V/H/S . The Watch

Most Overrated (2012) I didn't like these as much as you did.

PODCAST: Silent Horror

I'm very happy to announce that I've been asked to guest host on a new horror movie podcast run by my friend Jason Pyles from the "Considering the Sequels" podcast. "Horror Metropolis" is a new bi-weekly horror movie podcast featuring in-depth reviews of two horror films with at least one theme in common. It's hosted by Jason (Jay of the Dead) and features an all-star assembly of horror podcast co-hosts from the gargantuan Horror Palace network including the legendary Bill Chete, Dr. Shock (Dave from DVDInfatuation.com), and Terror Tovey. Happy to join their ranks and discuss something even more alienating to audiences than documentaries: Silent horror films. And one of them is a documentary! All right! Actually, I'm in my zone here and I had a great time discussing one of my all time favorite films, Nosferatu. Plus, I was given an awesomely cheesy horror podcasting name: "Wolfman Josh."  Stoked! Hope you enjoy it. And if you like it, also check out my previous foray into horror podcasting when Jason and I discussed all three versions of The Thing on his "Considering the Sequels" podcast.

Jay of the Dead » 5.25.12 »

Wolfman Josh Ligairi, a documentary filmmaker, joins us to talk about vampires and witches from the creepy era of Silent Horror.

The first hour of Episode 003 is dedicated to an in-depth discussion of “Nosferatu” (1922), the vampire film that defined the onscreen portrayal of the legendary blood-sucker. And during the remaining 47 minutes, we review a bizarre Swedish documentary about witchcraft called “Häxan” (1922).
